Call for United Nations Social Development Intern
Position Summary
The Inclusivity Project (TIP) and the Global Forum of Communities Discriminated on Work and Descent (GFoD) are seeking a passionate and motivated Social Development Intern to support the NGO Committee for Social Development (NGO CSocD). This internship offers a unique opportunity to engage directly with civil society advocacy at the United Nations.
As part of this role, the intern will help coordinate events, outreach efforts, and advocacy campaigns led by TIP. The focus will include activities of the NGO CSocD, especially those surrounding the annual Commission for Social Development and preparations for the 2025 World Social Summit. The intern will also contribute to strategic planning, provide administrative support, and work closely with the Communications Subcommittee to create digital content for the website, social media, and other platforms.
This internship provides hands-on experience in advancing social development goals at the UN level. By supporting the Chair of the NGO CSocD, the intern will gain insight into how civil society organizations influence international policies and programs.
Accountability
The intern will report to the Global UN Engagement Coordinator of TIP and work under the supervision of the Executive Committee of the NGO CSocD.
Location and Hours
The internship is based in New York, NY, and combines in-person and remote work. It requires five hours per day, three days a week, with at least one day spent at the office in the UN Church Centre. Regular in-person meetings at the UN Headquarters or nearby locations will also be part of the schedule.
The internship will begin in January 2024 and run for six months, with a possibility of extension beyond June 2025, depending on organizational needs.
Desired Background and Skills
Applicants should have a strong interest in working with NGOs and supporting the social development agenda at the United Nations. Familiarity with the UN's 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and related frameworks is highly desirable.
Successful candidates will have experience in collaborative projects, event planning, and managing hybrid events. Proficiency with tools such as Microsoft Office Suite, Google Suite, Zoom, Canva, Mailchimp, and WordPress is required, as is experience creating content for social media platforms like Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and LinkedIn.
Fluency in English is essential, and proficiency in another language is an advantage. Applicants must also be flexible, adaptable, and able to attend in-person meetings as needed.
Responsibilities
The intern will play a key role in supporting the NGO CSocD Secretariat, particularly in preparation for the 63rd Commission for Social Development. This will include assisting with monthly committee meetings, creating promotional materials, and contributing to internal and external reports.
Other tasks will involve staying informed about UN developments related to social development, collaborating with TIP staff and partner organizations, and handling general office administration. The intern will also support logistical coordination for events, including arranging visits for human rights defenders and managing related administrative tasks.
Confidentiality is critical, and the intern will be expected to safeguard all sensitive information handled during their tenure.
