Status of Communities Discriminated on Work and Descent: The situation of Roma women in Europe

women across Europe continue to face deep structural inequalities shaped by antigypsyism, discrimination, and socioeconomic exclusion. Drawing on data from multiple European countries, the report highlights challenges in accessing healthcare, education, employment, and protection from gender-based and institutional violence.

Despite their vital role in communities, Roma women remain largely absent from national strategies and gender-equality frameworks, limiting meaningful participation and visibility.

At the European level, policy commitments often fall short of addressing the intersecting realities of Roma women. The analysis shows weak implementation of anti-discrimination measures, insufficient targeting in EU and national Roma strategies, and a persistent lack of disaggregated data.

The report calls for stronger, intersectional approaches, improved participation of Roma women in decision-making, and sustained investment in community-led solutions, offering clear recommendations for governments, EU institutions, and UN bodies.
